Acting Rector of Taras Shevchenko National Kyiv

Doctor of Political Sciences, Professor

Born on March 5, 1962, in Kyiv, Ukraine. In 1984, he graduated from the Faculty of International Relations and International Law of Taras Shevchenko Kyiv State University with a Specialist degree in International Relations.

From 1984 to 1986, he worked as a military interpreter in the Republic of the Congo. From 1986 to 1988, he served as a consultant at the “Znannia” Society in Kyiv.

From 1988 to 1990, he pursued postgraduate studies at the Institute of International Relations of Taras Shevchenko National Kyiv. In 1990, he defended his Candidate of Sciences dissertation in Political Science and was awarded the degree of Candidate of Political Sciences.

Since 1990, he has been working at the Institute of International Relations of Taras Shevchenko National Kyiv, first as an Assistant Professor and, since 1991, as an Associate Professor at the Department of International Relations and Foreign Policy.

In 1997, he served as Director of the TEMPUS-TACIS Project T-JEP-10337-97 “Training Specialists in European Programmes.”

Since 1997, he has also been Director of the European Documentation Centre of the European Union at the Institute of International Relations.

From 1998, he headed the Centre for European Studies at the Institute of International Relations and served as Executive Director of the Summer Schools in European Studies.

In 2004, he defended his doctoral dissertation entitled “Theoretical and Practical Dimensions of the European Union Enlargement Process” and was awarded the degree of Doctor of Political Sciences.

In 2005, he was awarded the academic title of Professor at the Department of International Relations and Foreign Policy of the Institute of International Relations.

From 2007 to 2008, he served as Deputy Director for Academic Affairs at the Institute of International Relations. In 2008, he acted as Director of the Institute.

Since 2009, he has served as Director of the Institute of International Relations of Taras Shevchenko National Kyiv. Since 2021, he has been Director of the Educational and Scientific Institute of International Relations of Taras Shevchenko National Kyiv.

From 2012 to December 2015, he concurrently served as Acting Head of the Department of International Media Communications and Communication Technologies.

Professor Kopiika is a recognized expert in European integration and the foreign policy of Western European countries. He is the author of more than 150 scholarly and educational publications.

He has completed academic fellowships and delivered lectures at leading European universities and research institutions, including the Free Brussels (Belgium), the Hull (United Kingdom), and the South-West University “Neofit Rilski” (Bulgaria).

He has supervised six Candidates of Sciences (PhD equivalents).

For his significant contribution to the development of science, higher education, and the strengthening of Ukrainian state institutions, he has received numerous state, ministerial, and public awards. Among the highest state honors are the Order of Merit, Third Class, the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology, and the honorary title “Honored Education Worker of Ukraine.” He has also been awarded distinctions from the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

He is fluent in Ukrainian, French, and English.
